Child Safety and Protection

Manor Laps
Following alarming and distressing news about junior sports in recent weeks, Thorney RC wish to make it clear that safety and welfare of children is their major consideration at their Manor Laps events.

Each week the session is run by qualified teacher (Geoff Howes – with CRB police check and secondary teaching subject is PE).

Each week we have either 1 or 2 child protection officers present (Sally Louth and Jackie Dawson – both have CRB police check).

Parents are expected to stay and watch, or participate.

The children run laps of 500m and are visible at all times – they do not go out of sight.

Young children are accompanied to the Manor door if needing the toilets

Marshals are sent to patrol the corners and far side of the field if necessary (eg if dogs or older teenagers are around)

1st aiders are always present but if necessary, medical assistance is provided at the Leisure Centre.

Our Training Sessions

We are a small club and we hold three training sessions a week. Monday and Wednesday sessions begin at 7pm and we meet at the entrance to the swimming pool at Manor Leisure Centre, Station Rd, Whittlesey, PE7 1UA.

Monday is a structured training run with various speeds and distances depending on your ability. We use established routes of 3,4, 5 and 6 miles and we never let anyone run alone. We stick to circular routes with street lights in the winter. When the evenings become lighter the routes are more rural and varied as we aim to keep away from traffic.

The Wednesday session is more focused on speed training. This is a structured session on a measured course around the Snoots Rd estate in Whittlesey, and we meet first at the Manor Leisure Centre at 7pm. We work at our own ability and speed.

We also hold a family session on the field on the left at the Manor Leisure centre. This is a fun session which involves timed laps of the field of various distances, relay races and homemade cakes. In the winter this takes place on Saturday morning, and in the summer we enjoy the light evenings on a Friday evening. Times vary.

We are also planning to run our second Beginners course in May 2017. This free course aims to get individuals from the couch to 5km in 10 weeks in a safe and fun way. The course is well structured and run by qualified run leaders who are assisted by club members. It is aimed at absolute beginners or those who are returning to running after a long absence. The start date will be confirmed shortly.

If you are interested in joining any of these sessions, please contact us.

Thorney Running Club 5mile Pre race information **

What time does the race start?

Thorney Running Club 5mile starts at 10.30am and the 3km Fun Run starts at 9.30am. Pls note the Fun Run start is a good 10 min walk away from the hall. But the 10km start is very near to the Bedford Hall. Parking is also a 5/10min walk away from the start. Please allow plenty of time to park, then walk to Bedford Hall and collect your number, and then walk to the Fun Run start.

Where does the race start?

The Headquarters is Bedford Hall, Station Rd Thorney, PE6OQE. Pls note the Fun Run start is a good 10 min walk away from the hall. But the 10km start is very near to the Bedford Hall.

Where can I park?

Parking is a 5/10 minutes walk further down Station Rd, and will be well signed and marshalled. Please navigate to the Hall, and we can direct you from there.

When will I get my race number?

We do not send race numbers out by post before the race. Race numbers need to be collected from Bedford hall on race day (20th August).

I would like to enter on the day. Can I do this?

Yes, Registration will open at 8.30 am at Bedford Hall, PE60QE.

What facilities are there on race day?

There are lots of facilities at Bedford Hall. There is a large seating area, toilets, and an extensive range of home made refreshments on sale. Please note there are no showers. There will also be a physiotherapist available.

I think my child has been entered in the wrong age group.

At Thorney Running Club we calculate ages as on race day, not on school years. So a junior running in the U13 school team may not actually be under 13 on our race day. They may be in school Year 9, but could be 14 years old and will therefore be placed in the U15 age category in our event.

I might win the both the race, and an age category prize.

This is not possible at our races. The first three overall places take precedence over age prizes and you can not win both. You will win the race, and the age prize will go to the next fastest runner in the age group.

What are the rules regarding the team prizes?

**To qualify as part of a team you must be wearing team kit, and be registered as a club member when you enter our race. You must be a paid up member of your team with a URN number. We can not enter you retrospectively in a team.

Is water available?

Yes, there will be a water station at approximately halfway out on the course, and water will also be available at the finish line.
